How we verify what we publish
Carry law is state law. Fifty states write fifty different rules, and getting one wrong can cost someone their gun rights. So we hold ourselves to a source standard most sites in this space do not.
Our source standard
- Primary sources only. We read the state statute itself and the state's official Attorney General, State Police, or Department of Public Safety page.
- Third-party reciprocity trackers are a cross-check. They are never the source of a claim.
- Every legal claim on this site carries its citation in legal (Bluebook) format.
- If we cannot cite it, we do not publish it.
Our review schedule
We review the full dataset about once a quarter. It is currently marked Q3 2026. Laws change between reviews, so always verify with the destination state before you travel or apply.
Corrections log
When we find an error in our own data, we fix it and log it here with the statute that decided it. We think every site publishing carry law should do this.

Michigan
We had Michigan listed as honoring non-resident permits. Wrong. MCL 28.432a(h) limits Michigan's recognition to a resident of another state licensed by that state. We corrected Michigan to not recognized. Most general reciprocity lists still get this wrong.

Vermont
We stopped counting Vermont as a state that recognizes permits. Vermont has no permit system at all, so there is nothing for it to recognize. Counting it inflated the coverage number.

Illinois
We had Illinois listed as recognizing out-of-state permits. Wrong. Under 430 ILCS 66/40, Illinois recognizes no out-of-state license for carry on your person. There is only a narrow locked-vehicle transport exception. We corrected Illinois to not recognized.

Texas
We added Texas as a recognizing state. Texas Government Code section 411.173(b), as amended by SB 706 effective September 1, 2025, recognizes a valid license to carry a handgun issued by any other state. When we checked, the Texas DPS reciprocity web page still described the old repealed system. The statute controls.

Wisconsin
We added Wisconsin as a recognizing state for non-residents age 21 and older, per Wis. Stat. section 175.60 and the Wisconsin DOJ list of honored permits. Wisconsin residents still need the Wisconsin license.
